How to Curl Hair with a Straightener

January 4, 2021 By Lifestyle Princess Leave a Comment

You look absolutely great with silky straight hair thanks to your wonder flat iron, but there will be times that you want to rock having curls as well. When you get bored with the sleek look and want to try some sexy curls, using your handy flat iron will still work with these few tips. No need to go and purchase a curling iron when your hair straightener will do the job just as well. Why buy 2 hair styling device when 1 great hair straightener can perfectly straighten and curl at the same time?

You can make great waves, nice curls or sexy wavy locks, whichever strikes your fancy. Your flat iron will be able to produce amazing results when done right. You can have just as much fun curling your hair as making it straight. Nobody ever said only those with straight hair can have all the fun so if you feel adventurous and want to try another hair style, go ahead and make use of your hair straightener to make small or big waves and look good in the process.

What or how do you exactly go about doing this then? First, take note of the different curls you can experiment with and choose which type you would like to try out. Next, prepare your hair straightener, a 1-inch flat iron would do, and some would recommend using hair products to assist in making the curls last longer. Others would use heat protectant spray to avoid hair damage due to high temperature. There are several kinds of curls you can do. There is the loose curls or the wavy hair, the classic or regular curly hair, and then there is the tight or kinky hair.

Loose or Wavy Curls

This type, as the name suggest, is just loose curls that would look something between having straight and regular curls. It is fairly easy to do and depending on how thick your hair is, will not take much of your time. The result is you have this nice, lazy curls down your back and the waves would not look the same all over. Some would be a little flat while other are curled in the middle part.

First, divide your hair into several sections. You can start at the bottom and then work your way up. Grab a section and clamp it between the flat iron with the tip pointing up. Make sure that you keep the section of hair centered in the device to prevent snag. Wound that section around the flat iron and then unwind it. Unwrap it carefully and do this to all sections. If it looks like the curls are a bit too tight, simply run your fingers through them to loosen them.

Classic Curly Hair

This particular style has a definite “S” shape pattern. This is what you regularly see in a lot of women who have curly hair. This is what a lot of women with curly hair normally have. This type can be frizzy when not taken care of properly. Getting this kind of curl is easy to achieve though when using a flat iron.

Just divide hair into sections and also start curling from the bottom. Take a section closest to the nape and with your flat iron wrap a section of hair around it just twice. Make sure that the flat iron is pointing downward this time. Start at the middle section still and then slowly pull down the iron. Make sure you have an iron that doesn’t snag easily when styling your curls.

Kinky or Tight Curls

This tightly curled hair can be fine and little fragile. This curl would normally look like a zigzag pattern seen from the roots going to its end. This type needs extra care because of its fine texture. If you want to achieve this type of curl you need to start curling near the scalp area. The closer the better but also take care not to get too close as it may burn the area.

Starting again with parting the hair into several sections, wind a section on the flat iron this time starting from the top near the scalp. Pull it slowly down the length of your hair. Do the same thing to each section until you reach the top. You will get beautiful tight curls and you can preserve this with a hair spray of your choice.

All of these types of curls are great ways to style your hair when you get bored with the usual silky straight style. It might seem a bit difficult from the start but it actually gets easier with practice. You can create loose sexy waves to full bouncy curls in no time once you get the hang of it. Tips on how to curl your hair with a straightener are available online on pages like this. It will help you when you initially want to do it without using a curling iron. There are also other hair care techniques you need to be aware of to make sure your style lasts longer and won’t do any damage to your hair.

Prep your hair

While there are flat irons that can be use even on damp hair, if you want to curl your mane, it is recommended that your hair should be totally dry. Curling while hair is damp or wet would not give you the exact result you want. Curling while hair is wet won’t make the style stick. You also have the option to use hair mousse when you blow dry your locks. The mousse will lend extra volume to your hair and this will make your curls bouncy instead of being flat.

What is the best flat iron to use? To achieve the result you want, try using a straightener that is around 1-2 inches in width. Heat or set the device to the temperature needed in curling. Irons that are too wide may not be able to create curls the way you want them to be.

Apply heat resistance spray before you start. Using a heat resistant spray is important because this allows a barrier between the strands and that of the flat iron. Having this will ensure that your locks don’t frizzle and remain healthy even after being exposed to heat.

Separate hair into sections

Curling your hair can be a messy job if you don’t know the first thing to do with it. One important reminder is to do the curls one at a time. To achieve this, it would be better to part your hair into sections. First of all, tie all hair that is at your ear level or above it. Put the top hair into a bun and then proceed with styling from the bottom. Depending on the style, you can design it with loose waves or tight curls. You can begin with the locks that were not tied into a bun and then proceed to the next layer. If you want really nice regular curls, make sure to do a full turn of your locks when using the flat iron. You can experience between using a full turn or half turn and see which design suits you best.

If you part you hair into small sections then you will also get smaller curls. Curls are tighter this way. When you do choose to part hair into bigger section, you will see a bouncier style.
